Borg Saint Maurice
In June 2024, our annual cycling holiday was on the agenda. A core group of enthusiastic cyclists, supplemented with new faces to a total of 35 people, gathered for a week full of sporting challenges and fun in the mountains.
Our destination was a beautiful area in the French Alps on a campsite in Bourg Saint Maurice in large wooden chalets. The weather cooperated for the most part, with sunny days and an occasional fresh breeze, perfect for braving the high cols. On day 2, we cycled to a cozy hotel in La Chambre. We were warmly welcomed here, a separate room had been arranged where we could safely store our bikes. And even one of the evenings when the Netherlands soccer team had to play in the World Cup, we were able to watch the match on a huge screen. During the week, we climbed several iconic mountains, including the Col du Galibier, Col de la Madeleine and Col de la Croix de Fer. Each of these climbs offered unique views and a good dose of satisfaction when reaching the top.
But the highlight of the week was the famous Col de l'Iseran, the highest paved mountain pass in Europe. However, upon arrival on day 1 we were told that the pass was closed due to mudslides earlier that month. This news was a bit of a disappointment, but the weather turned out to be kind to us. After a few warm days and some extra effort from the road workers, the pass was opened at the end of the week.
In addition to the sporting achievements, there was also plenty of room for relaxation and enjoyment. Delicious meals were provided every day at our accommodations, from nutritious breakfasts to extensive dinners with local specialties.
The cycling holiday was a great success. The combination of challenging climbs, good company and unforgettable experiences made it a week to remember for a long time.
